Swim Meet 101

    Inclement Weather Policy:

We will wait a minimum of 20 minutes after thunder &/or lightning before resuming the meet. The meet will be cancelled if teams wait for 60 minutes and conditions are still unfavorable. Due to time restraints (the season is only 4 weeks long), no make up meets will be scheduled.

Events:

10 & under: Swimmers will swim 25 yards for all events. They will swim up to 2 individual events and 2 relays.

11 & older: Swimmers will swim 50 yards for all events. They will swim up to 2 individual events and 2 relays.

Why did my swimmer get a DQ?

All four strokes have rules for what is considered legal or illegal when swimming. An illegal stroke, turn or start can result in a disqualification (DQ), depending on the stroke judge's judgement. Coaches will work on correct stroke technique in practice and remind swimmers of what they need to do. A disqualification should not be a reason for a swimmer to get upset but is rather an opportunity to learn what they need to do differently next time.

The stroke judge will note what the swimmer did incorrectly so that the coaches can address it in practice.

Infractions that could lead to a DQ:

For all events:

  • Swimming the wrong stroke
  • Not finishing the event
  • Not touching the wall at a turn (for 50 yard+ events)
  • Pulling on the laneline
  • Pushing off the bottom
  • Leaving early (false start)

Butterfly:

  • Using a breaststroke or freestyle kickĀ
  • A one hand touch at wall (for a flip turn or finish)
  • Non-simultaneous arms

Backstroke:

  • Rolling over onto stomach at the finish (before touching wall).
  • Taking a stroke while on stomach at flip turn (for 50 yard events)
  • Rolling on stomach before touching wall for open turn (for 50 yard events)
